What a thrilling conclusion to the Sunsail race series finals weekend! Sunday delivered a true test of skill and nerve, with a cold, wintery day bringing a consistent 15 knots of breeze across the Solent. It was touch and go whether we’d be flying spinnakers, adding an extra layer of excitement to the day.
The first race, initially planned as a simple two-lap circuit with a limit of one reef, quickly became a single-lap sprint as the breeze picked up. The Deloitte team showed their mettle right from the start, securing first place off the line and maintaining a consistent lead throughout. A quick spinnaker hoist off the buoy kept us ahead, culminating in a challenging last-minute jibe to make the finish amidst a chaotic but successful spinnaker drop. A fantastic start to the day!
In the second race, we found ourselves second off the start, but it wasn’t long before the Deloitte crew found their rhythm, expertly catching up and overtaking to establish a comfortable lead for the remainder of the race. With the wind still lively, this race was sailed under white sails and one reef only, showcasing our adaptability and boat handling.
The final race of the series saw a two-reef limit imposed, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. Determined to achieve a full sweep, Deloitte once again powered off the start line in first place. We quickly established a comfortable distance from the fleet, allowing us the unique vantage point of spectating the exciting battle unfolding behind us for second and third place.
It was a truly outstanding performance from the Deloitte Sailing Club team, demonstrating exceptional teamwork, strategic prowess, and resilience in challenging conditions. A huge congratulations to everyone involved for a memorable and successful finals weekend!
