A number of sailing companies sell individual crew places onto their boats entered into various racing events. Some of these companies may prefer you to have done at least some basic sailing before – it’s worth speaking to them to find out what experience they like you to have before signing up.

Once you have mastered the basics of sailing and perhaps got a bit more race experience it’s possible to use some of the crew wanted/available sites mentioned above designed for racing crews and can also use race/series specific websites as these often have crew registers on as well – examples of some events on the solent which run crew registers are:
. Hamble Winter Series (Oct – Nov)
. Warsash Spring Series (Mar – Apr)
. Round the Island Race
. Cowes Week
. Dartmouth Yacht week
Again, just be honest and talk about your willingness to learn – we know a number of people who have got into yacht racing this way on minimum experience (Couple of courses and/or Deloitte sailing events) – don’t expect to go in and immediately get to do positions like bow or main trim – most owners will try you out for a few races to check you are reliable, fit in with the crew and are as keen as advertised to learn!
